Abrasion resistant coating composition and its production

PURPOSE: To provide a coating compsn. improved in resistance against ultravio let radiation and abrasion resistance and comprising inorg. oxide formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilane and (or) other metal alkoxide, and a process for the production thereof. CONSTITUTION: Alkoxide represented by general formula R x M(OR') z-x (wherein R is an org. group, M is selected from the group consisting of silicon, aluminum, titanium, zirconium and a mixture of them, R' is a low mol.wt. alkyl group, z is valency of M and x is smaller than z and may be 0) is at least partially hydrolyzed and colloidal oxide selected from a group consisting of silica, cerium oxide and a mixture thereof is added to the partial hydrolysate and, during this period, ion exchange is performed to remove sodium ions to form a silane.silica.ceria sol. By this method, an optically transparent abrasion resistant coating compsn. having resistance against ultraviolet radiation is produced. COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO
