Ballarat is renowned for its nineteeth century built heritage and historic streetscapes established during Victoria’s gold rushes. It is a living historic city with a current population of around 100,000 people and projections for a further 50% population growth over the next 27 years. Since 2012 the City of Ballarat has been implementing UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) and in 2013, signed a Strategic Cooperation agreement with the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research in Asia and the Pacific (WHITRAP) Shanghai, China to take part in an international HUL pilot program.
