Effective Transformer Management

2003
This paper reviews the latest technology for continuous on-line monitoring and control of power transformers. In conjunction with sampling for laboratory testing they provide an integrated tool for providing up to the minute information on transformer loading and condition. The system provides: Data logs and event records providing trends for long term planning as well as historic evidence of correct loading practice. This data is easily extracted into spreadsheets or other software for data analysis; Integration of data from third party specialized probes for condition monitoring for use in condition-based maintenance planning, reducing cost and increasing effectiveness of maintenance programs; Dynamic rating to allow system operators to load the transformers to their safe thermal limits based on real time site data - provides better control of emergency loads and allows deferment of capital expense on capital upgrades; Replaces conventional control equipment with more accurate robust electronic controls with self-diagnostics and superior communications capability for remote indication and control.
