Desmoid tumor of the anterior abdominal wall in a 23-year-old woman: a case report

2013
Desmoid tumors are monoclonal proliferation of fibroblasts derived from muscle aponeurotic structures. We present a case of desmoid tumor in the anterior abdominal wall in a 23-year-old woman as well as describe its appearance on computed tomography scan (CT), ultrasonography (US) and histopathological. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy and all clinically visible tumor was totally excised, including resection of the abdominal wall musculature. The abdominal reconstruction was made with a polypropylene mesh. The surgical specimen was subjected to histopathological examination, which demonstrated that it was a desmoids-type fibromatosis. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient is without evidence of recurrence 9 months after surgery.
