Efficacy of Gabapentin for Prevention of Postoperative Catheter-related Bladder Discomfort in Patients Undergoingopens prostatectomy

Introduction: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) secondary to catheterization of urinary bladder is distressing. The aim of our study was, to evaluate gabapentin for preventing CRBD and pain severity in patients undergoing open prostatectomy. Methods: Forty-two patients undergoing open prostatectomy were randomly allocated to 2 intervention and placebo groups. First group received stat dose of 300 mg and 100 mg q8 h of gabapentin and the other one received placebo. The patients were observed for the incidence and severity of CRBD in the postoperative period and pain severity (VAS index). Amount of morphine that patient might need, were recorded.
