HDAC in obesity: A critical insight

2020
Abstract Background Obesity is a serious health issue globally. Intake of high fructose diet and modern lifestyle is the major cause of disease. Development of obesity initiate the progression of several complications viz. cancer, sleep apnea, arthritis and heart attack. Purpose The current manuscript enumerate the role of histone deacetylase (HDACs) in the progression of obesity by altering the enzymatic activity. Method A thorough study of research and review articles available on internet from PubMed, MEDLINE and concerned sites was performed on HDACs in obesity. Result Due to western lifestyle, obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. High caloric intake and inadequate physical exercise result in obesity. As a disease, it is recognized as a major risk factor for the progression of several complications such as congestive heart failure, stroke, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and certain type of cancer. From various reports the role of epigenetic markers in development of obesity has been evaluated. HDAC enzyme initiates the formation of chromatin and in nucleus it produces several proteins that control activities in mammals. HDAC delete an acetyl group from protein thereby altering the expression of gene and stimulates acetylation in mitochondria and cytosol. Conclusion The present manuscript focus on role of HDAC in the progression of obesity and its complication and enumerating the use of histone deacetylase inhibitor in the management of obesity and other relate complications.
