Valence Determination and Lattice Location via Mössbauer Spectroscopy of Gd151 Implanted into Iron

1974
Measurements of hyperfine interactions and isomer shift (a measure of the electronic density around the nucleus of the ion being studied) by Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS) can provide useful infoimation for the study of the configuration and bonding of implanted impurity ions. MS has two advantages over many competing techniques: First, it is microscopic; it measures the properties of discrete ions and hence is rather independent of the presence of inequivalent sites or “inactive” centers. Second, the parameters observed are almost entirely determined from the nearest atomic neighbors. Hence, well-defined spectra can be obtained even with heavily damaged “amorphous” samples.
