Petrophysical Analysis And AVO Technique Successfully Estimate Reservoir Quality of Carbonate, Onshore Guajira Basin, Northern Colombia

2008
The AVO technique has been proven successful in hydrocarbon exploration for gas-sand reservoirs such as those in the Texas Gulf Coast, the North Sea, and West Africa, but there are limited cases published in which the AVO technique has been applied successfully in carbonate reservoirs. This study is one of the few cases in which the AVO technique has been applied successfully to evaluate carbonate reservoir quality. The reprocessing had produced very good quality prestack time migrated surface seismic data for AVO analysis and had greatly improved bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio. Well log data, sidewall core, DST data, surface seismic data were used for petrophysical analysis and AVO modeling for the Lower Upper Miocene carbonate interval in the Guajira basin in northern Colombia to detect the good quality porous limestone reservoir trend. We concluded that the AVO technique can be successfully used as a tool to detect the good-quality limestone trends in the area of study.
