Plasma display panel and method for producing same

This plasma display panel (1) is provided with a front-surface plate (2), and a rear-surface plate (10) that faces the front-surface plate. A discharge space (16) is provided between the front-surface plate and the rear-surface plate. The front-surface plate has a dielectric layer (8), and a protective layer (9) for covering the dielectric layer. The protective layer contains at least a first metal oxide and a second metal oxide. The first metal oxide is magnesium oxide. The second metal oxide is one type of oxide selected from a group consisting of calcium oxide, strontium oxide and barium oxide. The concentration of the second metal oxide in the surface on the discharge-space side of the protective layer is higher than the concentration of the second metal oxide in the interior of the protective layer. As a result, it is possible to provide a plasma display panel capable of low-voltage operation.
