Antibodies to VACV antigens of the extracellular virion (EV) form play a central role in protection against poxvirus diseases in animal models, and contribute to the protection of immunized humans against poxviruses. B5, a viral EV protein, is conserved among different orthopoxviruses and antibodies to B5 that protect mice against VACV challenge.
