Spectrophotometry and Chromatography for Identification of Antioxidants and Accelerators in Rubber Mixtures

Abstract The difficulties encountered in the identification of antioxidants and accelerators in rubber mixtures are reviewed. A method of column chromatographic separation of components contained in the mixture extracts is discussed. The identification of the principal ingredients is achieved by means of ultraviolet and infrared spectrophotometry utilizing mixtures containing different antioxidants. Various spectra are presented, produced by both types of spectrophotometry, illustrating the efficiency of the method. The method could also be used to identify certain components of plastic material extracts.
