A note on the movement of moisture between the components in a sealed package

1994
The current method of packing paintings with the minimum free air space and without buffering material is reassessed. This practice creates good environmental conditions for objects containing a single moisture-sensitive component but not for those which contain a minor component with different hygrometric properties. Examples of damage caused by the movement of moisture from one component to another are presented. The transfer of moisture from a minor component can be alleviated by including relative humidity buffering materials in a sealed package.
