Red Light Running Prediction System using LIDAR

2019
Red Light Running (RLR) is an action that violates the red traffic signal by passing through a signalized intersection. RLR problem is a serious problem that could lead anywhere from minor violations of traffic to a fatal accident. Preemptive measures can be taken to reduce RLR incidents by detecting RLR in advance and notifying the cars in proximity. In this paper, we propose a new system to prevent potential accidents by predicting RLR. The proposed system consists of a Light-Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor for speed measurement and a prediction algorithm based on the Stop Sight Distance (SSD) formula to find the braking distance according to the speed. The sensor installed in the front or the side of the vehicle measures the speed of the vehicle that is moving toward the intersection and predicts the RLR violation of the vehicle. Experimental results showed that RLR violation could be predicted with LIDAR and the SSD algorithm from both the front and side of a moving vehicle.
