A Facile Synthesis of 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-2-germa-3,5-heptandione: The Preparation and Characterization of the First Germa-β-diketonate Copper(II) Complex

High-yield synthesis of acetyltrimethylgermane (1) facilitated the synthesis of the first germa-β-diketone, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-2-germa-3,5-heptanedione (tmghdH; 3), and its Cu(II) complex, Cu(tmghd)2 (4). Cu(tmghd)2 was found to be more volatile than Cu(tmhd)2 (tmhdH = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione) by thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray diffraction studies of Cu(tmghd)2 showed it to have essentially square planar geometry, with the Cu atom situated on a center of symmetry.
