PRIVATE SECTOR DEPENDS ON PUBLIC WORKS

1989
This article presents the comments of five U.S. businesses regarding infrastructure. Albertsons Incorporated is a company vitally concerned about a community's infrastructure when selecting sites for construction of supermarkets. The Monsanto Company moves hundreds of thousands of tons of products and raw materials by barge along the nation's inland waterways, over its highways and on its rail system. They need an efficient, safe transportation system, which is the critical link in their manufacturing and distribution chain. Motorola Incorporated, when selecting a site for a new location of their rapidly expanding business, finds it imperative that communities keep highways, bridges, airports, railroad stations, and bus stations in top condition. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce believes that, while it is true that the cost of solving our infrastructure problems is large, the cost of doing nothing is greater in the long run. Finally, Midland Enterprises Incorporated finds that many of our locks and dams are old and outdated, causing severe safety and reliability problems, but sees help on the way with passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986.
