Every literary genre means nothing without the reader attempting to define it, which is particularly true in this research on the significance of Abu> Nuwa>s' poem, zuhdiyya>t. The poem is compiled in Di>wa>nu Abi> Nuwa>s that was written by Ahmad â��Abdul Maji>d al-Gaza>ly. The research for significance calls for identification of signs found in the poem texts. Semiotics theory, therefore, is needed to view literary work (poem) as a sign system. The theory of semiotics put forward by Michael Riffaterre has been chosen in the research since it is considered able to disclose significance of the poem. A poem says one thing and means another. It means a poem reveals significance not as expressed in the verses but something else. In an attempt to express the significance of five chosen poems, A>sifun â��alal-Ma>d}y, Afirru Ilayka Minka, an-Nafsu wad-Dunya>, Alla>hu Aâ��la>, and Tad}arraE»a, the writer applied two acts of semiotics reading
