Comorbilidad de esclerosis múltiple y trastorno bipolar. Patogenia y diagnóstico

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder can be represented in multiple sclerosis (MS). Although research in this area is limited, studies evaluating the nature of this association have focused on the genetics, adverse drug reaction and brain demyelinating lesions. The case of a patient with MS who also have bipolar disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a 65 years diagnosed 30 years before MS after presenting an episode of optic neuritis with a box of comorbid behavioral disorders, euphoria, delusions of prejudice, requiring psychiatric-liaison and being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder type I. On MRI T2 hyperintense lesions are objectified in the periventricular white matter and semi-oval. Since then relapses occur affective disorder with each outbreak of MS, even without treatment with corticosteroids, indicating multidisciplinary care between the services of Neurology and Psychiatry. DISCUSSION: The coexistence of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in the majority of relapses of MS highlights the importance of biological factors in the onset of mood disorders in these patients.
