Anterior Choroidal or Anterior Temporal Artery

1994
In their recent article, Hart et al 1 state that "Only the most anterior part of the temporal lobe is consistently part of the internal carotid territory, through the anterior choroidal artery, a branch of the MCA [middle cerebral artery]." While their conclusions are correct, the facts are wrong. The anterior choroidal artery is a reliably found branch of the internal carotid artery originating just distal to the origin of the posterior communicating artery. The anterior tip of the temporal lobe is usually irrigated by the anterior temporal artery, commonly the first major branch of the middle cerebral artery, if the lenticulostriate arteries are excluded. While this fact does not change the interpretation of their article, basic anatomic facts should be correct if used as a basis for functional judgments.
