ELBOW ARTHROSCOPY IN TRAUMA AND RECONSTRUCTION

1999
Since its introduction by Burman in 1932, 8 elbow arthroscopy has increased in popularity.* *References 2,4,7,10,12,14,22,25,26,31,32,34,37,38,47,48,52 .Yet advanced arthroscopic techniques in the elbow have developed slowly because of the difficulty in gaining experience, demanding surgical techniques, and the proximity of nerves and vessels. A survey of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons revealed that only 7.6% of orthopedic surgeons perform elbow arthroscopy. Other articles in this issue have discussed various topics and procedures related to trauma and reconstruction. The indications, exact techniques, and results are evolving. Although experience with many new techniques and indications are growing, many of the foregoing procedures should not be considered efficacious until further follow-up is obtained. This article demonstrates the use of elbow arthroscopy as it relates to traumatic and posttraumatic conditions.
