Innovative distribution and delivery of food

Abstract The penetration of the internet and the advancement of technological innovations have not only seen the growth and popularity of various social media platforms but have also led to a shift from traditional ways of providing services to online-based services in almost every sector. Online food delivery services have reformed the food industry by delivering food items to the doorsteps of consumers. However, the main questions that the service providers face are related to not only optimization of the distribution network but also related to food quality, safety, and also sustainability. But for examining these issues, it is crucial for organizations to under the user perspectives better. This chapter discusses the important research works on the topics of concern, before presenting the results of the thematic analysis based on semistructured interviews, as well as from user-generated data to give an overview of the customer’s viewpoints. Finally, food quality, food safety, and sustainability, based on three decision levels: strategic, tactical, and operational planning is discussed. This chapter also discusses the change of strategies for effective handling of operations in case of emergency outbreaks.
