Challenges in management of nephrolithiasis in a patient with class III obesity (BMI 97)
2021
Abstract Patients with severe obesity have an increased risk of renal and ureteral calculi formation, and therefore, increased risk of associated complications. Despite the expanding number of people with obesity, there remains a dearth of scientific literature and training in navigating the associated limitations of our healthcare system. We present a case of a patient with severe, class III obesity (BMI 97) who was transferred to our tertiary care center for treatment of obstructive kidney stone disease. We highlight challenges in caring for our patient and discuss our approach and lessons learned for care of this vulnerable bariatric population.
