The "invisible" faculty member: The university professor with a hearing disability

This article reviews the characteristics ofage-related hearing loss and discusses theconsequences of hearing loss for seniorprofessors at our universities and colleges. It presents some of the strategies, for use bythe hearing-impaired and thenon-hearing-impaired, to adapt successfully toage-related hearing impairments. Examples arecited for the classroom and for the generaluniversity environment. By commenting on herpersonal experiences as a senior facultymember, the author hopes to illuminate someimportant issues raised when a professor hasimpaired hearing.
