The invention discloses a Bootloader based XFP optical module upgrading method. The method includes the following steps: opening a Bootloader storage region in a FLASH region of a microcontroller of an XFP optical module, wherein a Bootloader initiator is stored in the Bootloader storage region; selectively initiating the Bootloader, and executing upgrading operation on data in a program code region in the FLASH region. By the method, users can perform program upgrading through an optical module bus interface according to different target switches and routers as well as perform remote control upgrading through the internet, the purpose of compatibility is achieved, return to factories for recording programs with a programming unit is not required, loss of valid data or debugging and testing parameters is not caused, and the method is an effective solution for upgrading the programs of the microcontroller of the optical module.
