This research investigates the effectiveness of reading for pleasure in vocabulary
acquisition. This research was to find out whether teaching vocabulary by using
reading for pleasure activity can increase students’ vocabulary acquisition. This
research used one group pre-test and post-test design in quantitative research
method. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test). This
research involves 66 students as sample among regular seventh grade of MTsN 1
Pandeglang in academic year 2018/ 2019. The last result showed that t-observation
“to” that the writer gor from the calculation is higher than t-table “tt” both at the
degree of significant 5% and 1 %. Significant 5% to = 3,71 and tt = 1,99 that means
to > tt or 3,71 > 1,99 and significant 1% to = 3,71 and tt = 2,65 that means to > tt or
3,71 > 2,65. In addition, the result of the observation showed that the students more
motivated in learning English, especially in vocabulary by using reading for
pleasure activity. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that reading for
pleasure activity effectively can be used in teaching vocabulary acquisition. The
result of this research shows that students’ vocabulary acquisition by using reading
for pleasure activity achieve better score than those who do not use it.
