Applicability Research of WRC107 in Peak Stress Intensity Calculation

Global structure discontinuity at nozzle of pipe or vessel causes a high local stress,and the stress solution is difficult to get.Bulletin WRC107 delivers a calculation method,but its calculation errors in nozzle design are not clear yet.For peak stress intensity calculation of cylindrical shell,with support or lifting lug under axial loading,the influences of parameters β,γ and the thickness of nozzle on errors were studied,by comparing results of WRC107 with results of finite element method(FEM).For calculation of cylindrical shell under pressure,with support or lifting lug under axial loading(pressure and mechanical loading),WRC107 was supplemented by Chinese standard HG 20582—1998"Specification for Stress Calculation of Steel Chemical Vessels"(HG method),and the errors are studied.The results show that,the hollow support or lug could be equivalent to solid attachment when thickness is twice of the shell thickness.WRC107 calculation errors depend on parameters β and γ,and may be underestimated.Complemented by HG method,WRC107 could be used to stress calculation of shell under pressure and mechanical loading.
