Evolución del estado de conciencia en sujetos con traumatismo encéfalo-craneano grave tratados en la sala de estimulación multisensorial de un centro de rehabilitación
2019
Objective: To describe the evolution of consciousness in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), treated in a multisensory stimulation room (MSSR) of a rehabilitation center, in Argentina.
Materials and method: An observational, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted. Patients aged >17 years, admitted to the MSSR at I.Na.Re.P.S between April 2016 and January 2019, with TBI and altered consciousness—Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) score <21—were included in the study.
Results: Out of 17 patients, thirteen (76.5%) improved at least one category according to the CRS-R. The median time of treatment in the MSSR was 6 (IQR 3.5 - 9) months. The final CRS-R was 15 (IQR 12.5 - 22) points, and the median score change in the pre- and post-treatment CRS-R was 8 (IQR 4 - 12) points. Six (35.3%) patients reached values ≥ 21 points in the CRS-R by the end of their treatment.
Conclusion: Thirteen patients with TBI and altered consciousness improved at least one category after multisensory treatment. Six patients obtained scores ≥ 21 in the CRS-R and were discharged from the MSSR.
