The Need for Enhanced Resiliency in Building Design and Construction

Enhanced resiliency is crucial for improved community recovery and continuity following disasters. Community continuity often has regional, national, or even international impacts. Data is presented to demonstrate the need for enhanced resiliency in building design and construction due to dramatic increases property losses over the last five decades. A variety of possibilities causing this dilemma are investigated. Programs, strategies, and trends as well as the pros and cons of voluntary and mandatory efforts intended to result in more resilient communities are highlighted. Activities and research necessary to support the integration of enhanced resiliency in building design and construction are identified.
