comparetreatment regimens oftwo widelyusednaturalsurfactant preparations CurosurfandSurvantain respiratory distress syndrome(RDS). Methods-Theeffects ofthetwotreat- mentregimens ongasexchange, ventila- toryrequirements, and28dayoutcomein infants withRDS werecompared. Seventy five preterm infants (birth weight700-1500 g)withRDS requiring artificial ventilation withan FIO2of:04,wererandomly selected at1-24hoursofage.Onegroup received aninitial doseofCurosurf (200 mg/kg);theothergroupSurvanta(100 mg/kg). Patients whoremained dependent onartificial ventilation withanFIO2ofB0*3 received up totwoadditional dosesof Curosurf (eachof100mg/g)after 12and 24hoursoruptothree additional dosesof Survanta (eachof100mg/kg)betweensix and48hoursafter theinitial dose. Results-There wasarapidimprovement inoxygenation andventilatory require- ments were reducedin bothgroups. However, infants treated withCurosurf had a higherarterial:alveola r oxygen
