Biomimetic Artificial Hair Sensor Array: Towards Self-Healing Sensors

2021
This work presents the sensing part of a self-healing artificial hair sensor array that can be used for flow sensing and haptic exploration. The system consists of metallic strain gauges embedded in a flexible substrate over extrusion channels where a hair can grow. Together with the sensor array, a measurement board was developed that automatically calibrates the sensors, processes the signal and sends it to a computer. Measurements with three different surfaces prove that different materials can be recognized if these have nonidentical surfaces.
