Dual Implantation of Inflatable Penile Prosthesis and Artificial Urinary Sphincter or Male Sling: Benefits and Risks

2020
Introduction: After treatment for lower urinary tract urologic malignancy, patients often face anatomical and functional changes that can result in erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. While significant advances have been made to prevent these complications, many patients continue to be impacted by one or both conditions. After failure of conservative therapies, the penile implant, artificial urinary sphincter, and male urethral sling can each provide symptomatic relief and improve quality of life. When bothered by both conditions, these devices can be implanted in combination either simultaneously or in a staged manner. We review the contemporary literature and share our own clinical experience over the past 30 years treating patients with both urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction using prosthetic devices.
