Multimode Memories in Longitudinally Broadened Ensembles
2008
The ability to store multiple optical modes in a quantum memory allows for increased efficiency of quantum communication and computation. Here we show how the multimode capacity of ensemble-based quantum memories is improved by adding a controlled inhomogeneous broadening. It is found that for large broadenings this capacity grows linearly with the applied broadening, becoming independent of the optical depth of the ensemble.
