Addressing some challenges inautonomic monitoring inself-managing networks

2005
Self-monitoring isoneofthekeyexpected capabilities ofanautonomic systenm Anautonomic system can beasingle network nodeortheentire network asanentity, having theability toautomatically adjust itsbehaviour based ontheconditions inwhich thesystem andits components work. Self-monitoring forthepurposes ofself-configuration, co- operative eventdetection byanumberofsystems inanetwork, knowledge/imformation distribution, service-diagnosis andself- protection requires a numberofchallenges/questions tobe addressed. Inthis paper, wepresent theconcepts behind self- monitoring asacapability ofasingle nodeandasacapability ofanetwork that isconsidered asanentity. We also discuss the challenges andquestions tobeaddressed whendesigning and deploying self-monitoring mechanism forasingle nodeandfor anentire network and, we present somesolutions tothese chaUenges. Because self-monitoring isbroad, we imit ourfocus toself-monitoring applied to inbound/outbound protocol- specific traffic atsomepoint(s). Aspartofthesolution tosome challenges wetrytoaddress, weintroduce theconcept ofOn- DemandMonitoring (ODM)ofprotocol-specific traffic.
