Buckling instability of the layers in a smectic-A liquid crystal

Abstract We observe a new instability (undulation of layers) in a smectic-A liquid crystal (CBOOA), submitted to a negative pressure across the layers. We derive from the observed undulation period the penetration length of de Gennes λ=(22±3) A .
