Rapid analysis of HTPB (hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene) properties with infrared spectroscopy and gel chromatography

2020
Analysis of HTPB properties is important in the quality control belong production, storage, and product development research especially polyurethane. The fast, high mobility and less chemicals consumption will make the HTPB quality analysis method cheaper. This research discusses the development of cheap and fast HTPB analysis technology using FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) and GPC (gel permeation chromatography). The results of the analysis show that FTIR and GPC are sufficient to determine the hydroxyl value, hydroxyl number, configuration structure, distribution of molecular weight and polydispersity, and secondary hydroxyl. FTIR and GPC analysis can be used to determine HTPB damage during storage by knowing the levels of epoxide. Validation results with several other methods of analysis prove this. The results of FTIR and GPC analysis of HTPB stored for more than two years was damage.
