Numerical Simulation on Flow Fields in Aluminum Reduction Cells with Different Current Risers and reeze Profile

2002
To describe the turbulent flowing of melt in aluminum reduction cells, Navier Stokes equation with "k e" two equation turbulence model is adopted. For three types of different current risers, 200kA, 160kA and 80kA, and 160kA aluminum reduction cell with different freeze profile, the source. i.e. Lorentz force, in the momentum equation is calculated based on the simulating results of magnetic fields and temperature fields. Numerical calculation on three dimension steady state flow of melt is performed. The results show that, for the case of simulating mode, metal flows as the pattern of four eddies in 200kA cell and two eddies in 160kA and 80kA. The current risers and the freeze profile have a strong effect on the flow pattern of metal.
