fMRI of Heroin and Ketamine Addiction

2016
Abstract This chapter briefly describes the changes in the nervous system of heroin and ketamine addicts. The focus is on the areas of activation and deactivation upon fMRI while in motion. Drug-cued activities are also reviewed and the prefrontal area is shown as a center for craving. Since fMRI studies are only in the beginning stage of research and clinical treatment, only a comparison of up- and downregulated activities could be documented in the heroin and ketamine addicts. Correlated magnetic resonance imaging results and pathological consequences are also discussed in this minireview.
