Job-consciousness of White-collar Employees and its Determinants

This paper analyzes the unique position of white-collar employees in the Chinese SOEs in the late 1990s.We find that the job-consciousness of white-collar employees,particularly their attitudes towards market economy,is quite similar to that of lower managers,despite the fact that their wages are not so different from those of workers.This finding is partly related to the rather high level of their educational background.It implies that the prevailing job-consciousness is not so much affected by working conditions.
