Characterization of starch thermoplastic based on glutardialdehyde modified starch

2019
Thermoplastic starch is an interesting material, due to lower cost of production and more environmental friendly. To develop biodegradable plastics, modification of the starch is required to improve its characteristics and properties. Therefore, an analysis was done to study the effect of an alkaline treatment with NaOH and glutardialdehyde crosslinking on the structure, physical and mechanical properties of thermoplastic corn starch (CS). The modified form have been characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The effect of alkaline treatments (NaOH) and the chemical modification of starch with glutardialdehyde significantly showed better thermal stability compared to using only starch. The modified starch, S/0.5M 20g showed very good performance and high stability after polymer blending and crosslinking, which will be beneficial for the plastic applications.Thermoplastic starch is an interesting material, due to lower cost of production and more environmental friendly.
