Studies on Calving Pattern in Gir Crossbred Cattle
2008
The data on 1945 number of calvings of Gir crossbred cattle maintained at RCDP on Cattle, MPKV, Rahuri was collected over a period of 11 years (1988–89 to 1998–99). The collected data was classified into 4 different periods viz., P1 (1988–89 to 1990–91), P2 (1991–92 to 1993–94), P3 (1994–95 to 1996–97) and P4 (1997–98 to 1998–199). The data was sub-divided into three seasons and 12 months of calving. The period, season and month of calving were considered as sources of variation in calving pattern. The collected data was analyzed by x2 test. The study revealed that the period of calving had non-significant influence on calving pattern. The significant influence of season of calving (P<0.01) and month of calving (P<0.05) was noticed on calving pattern in Gir crossbreds. The maximum calvings were recorded in winter season in the month of October. From these results it may be concluded that the variation in climatic conditions severely affects the calving pattern in Gir crossbred cattle.
