ANALYSIS OF THE OFFSHORE DRILLING PROCESS FOR SAFETY ASPECTS

One of the major safety hazards facing the offshore drilling industry is the problem of gas kicks and blowouts. This paper describes an analysis of the drilling process using procedure analysis coupled with parameter and state estimation, to give warnings of possible safety violations, as well as early kick prediction and kick detection. The hierarchical layered analysis structure, and the methods used are described.
