Population and the environment [letter]

1991
McCally and Cassel stress that population and industrialization are the 2 sources of global environmental changes. Curiously when suggesting actions for physicians to take they do not once mention population control. Could it be that we are so intimidated by the current political backlash that we have completely retreated from the goals of population growth? If not why do medical organizations like Physicians for Social Responsibility not take the lead and revive the goals of population growth which may be more effective in the long run than all other recommended measures?
