Investigation of multi rotor small horizontal axis wind turbine at low wind speeds

2020
This paper focuses on different configurations for efficient performance of single and multi-rotor small horizontal axis wind turbine operating at low Reynolds number. In this study for running a turbine the blade used are different airfoils such as SG6043, S1221, and NACA4415comprising blade radius of 0.2 m, 0.2 m and 0.40 m respectively. The blades of multi rotor small HAWT are manufactured using the Rapid Prototype Technique and revamped in manner that can capture maximum amount of wind flowing across the system. By the use of Ansys software, Q-blade and CFD simulation the entire structure together with horizontal shaft of 1 meter and support placed for generator is scrutinized. Blades of variegated profiles, size, and length have repositioned and collated to adapt the working of multi rotor system over wide range of wind velocity. Attributable to multi-rotor small HAWT, generator possessing high torque rotates easily. Moreover, the horizontal axis shaft enables hefty blades to turn with no bother. To contrive the setup of multi rotor small axis HAWT pragmatically it was tested by using wind tunnel by varying wind velocity and blade pitch angle. Hence, investigation gives complete scenario of output achieved by conducting different layout of blades amended to small multistage HAWT.
