Giant Pulmonary Hamartoma: An Interesting Clinico-Pathologic Entity

2010
P hamartomas are benign neoplasms that consist of mesenchymal elements. A 55-year-old woman presented with persistent cough of one month duration. Chest X-ray demonstrated a large pulmonary lesion on the right side (Fig. 1A and B). Computed tomographic (CT) scan confirmed a 12.6 cm× 12.7 cm× 12.6 cm sized benign appearing lesion involving the right lower lobe (Fig. 1C). During thoracotomy, the right lower lobe was completely replaced by a giant tumour (Fig. 2A, supplementary data). She underwent right lower lobectomy Giant hamartomas as described in the present case are rare. Cartilage constitutes the most common connective tissue component of these tumours. Lining of epithelial clefts by typical or atypical respiratoy epitheliummay represent entrapped epithelium. Lobectomy is the operation of choice when a giant tumour causes complete replacement of the lobe.
