2014
In this paper the importance of the declaration of the Sierra la Laguna as a Biosphere Reserve is discussed; also the achievements, gaps and challenges of this reserve are analyzed. One achievement is the increment of the scientific knowledge, intensified taxonomic and ecological work since the reserve was created. It has promoted the conservation of species and ecosystems, soil restoration, reforestation and invasive species control. The managers of the reserve have included the local residents in the programs of payments for environmental services and improving the quality of life of the ranchers. The main threat to this, and several Mexican reserves, is the projects of open pit mining, which should be explicitly prohibited by current legislation of natural protected areas.
