High Rate Capability of Li(NiCoMn)1/3O2 Electrode for Li-Ion Batteries

2011
The rate capability of a battery is highly dependent on the kinetic and transport properties of the electrode materials. Lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide(NCM) is one of the promising insertion materials used in Li-ion batteriesfor automotive applications due to its large capacity and high energy density.[1-3]To optimize battery design and improve cell performance, it is important to understand the transport and kinetic limitationsboth at the particle scale and at the scale of a thick, porous electrode. In this study, we focus on understanding this material’s performance at the particle scale. We achieve this by combining experiments on thin-film electrodes (where porous electrode effects are minimized) with a continuum model at the particle scale.
