TheUseofL-Lysine Monohydrochloride inCombination withMercurial Diuretics intheTreatment of Refractory Fluid Retention

1960
the basic amino acids were examined. Achildwith refractory edema unable to take ammo-nium or calcium chloride tolerated L-lysinemonohydrochloride well, and subsequentlyhad a good diuretic response to mercurial ad-ministration.5 In orderfurther to evaluate theeffectiveness of this substance in producingthe metabolic effects necessary to reestablishmercurialresponsiveness, L-lysine monohydro-chloride* wasadministeredto a groupofadultpatients whohadedemaresistant to mercurialdiuretics. It wasfound that this material pro-duces an adequate hyperchloremic acidosiswithout the undesirable side effects of ammo-nium and calcium chloride.
