The implications of the management of rio de janeiro metro upon the city's transport system and urban development

1987
The metro of rio de janeiro, when created was to be an integral part of the metropolitan transport system but also a guiding element of the urban and transport system structure and development. The process of the metro system implementation showed a different story. In fact, it is not integrated with the rest of the transport system and it has not changed or stimulated urban development in a significant degree. The main reasons why reality did not follow plans seem to rest on the management structure of both the urban transport system as a whole and the metro system itself. The present paper intends to clarify these questions in order to provide an understanding of the role that metro management conditions play on the integration of the urban transport system and its impacts on the urban system (a).
