Le phénomène La Niña et la « catastrophe écologique » de l'île de Pâques

EnglishEaster Island continues to raise many questions, especially regarding the origins of the drastic ecological changes that occurred during the XV to XVIIth centuries. Instrumental observations (1982-2015), paleoclimatic proxies (1500-2000) and the output of a numerical simulation (850-1850) suggest that the occurrence of La Nina events, and the related well-marked rainfall deficit and evapotranspiration increase, could likely be one of the main causes responsible for the drastic ecological changes starting in the XVth century. We thus argue the usually-advocated anthropogenic causes and previously poorly discussed La Nina-related climatic effects both have to be considered to improve our understanding of the environmental modif ications of Easter Island. francaisL'ile de Pâques continue a susciter nombre d'interrogations, notamment quant aux origines anthropiques et/ou climatiques des changements ecologiques majeurs qui se sont produits a partir du XVe siecle. Dans cet article, l'analyse combinee d'observations climatiques instrumentales (1982-2015), d'indicateurs paleoclimatiques (1500-2000) et de simulations d'un modele numerique (850-1850) suggere que des anomalies climatiques associees aux evenements La Nina peuvent a elles seules avoir engendre des deficits pluviometriques et hydriques consequents. Facteurs anthropiques et climatiques doivent donc etre analyses de concert pour parfaire notre comprehension des modifications ecologiques importantes de l'ile de Pâques.
