PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of displaying properly an image even with variations or the like of an output format of an image data signal, and to provide a method for driving the image display device. SOLUTION: The image display is provided with: a plurality of pixels 4 arranged in a matrix; gate wires and source wires; and gate driver circuits 2, 3 for supplying a gate signal to the gate wire, on the same substrate. Each of the gate driver circuits 2, 3 is provided with a shift register circuit having a plurality of stages for outputting sequentially the gate signal to each of the gate wire, selection periods of the gate signals supplied to the adjacent gate wires are overlapped partially, the selection period of the gate signal supplied to at least one gate wire is made shorter than that of the gate signal supplied to the other gate wire, and a start signal is supplied to the shift register at timing after a head position of the image data signal supplied to the image display.
