Observation of a cylindrical mirror analyzer artifact

1981
Using a cylindrical mirror analyzer (CMA) to perform electron energy loss spectroscopy, a small surface‐independent peak has been observed in the energy spectrum at an apparent energy above that of the primary elastic peak. The position of this peak varies linearly with the primary beam energy. Calculations using the parameters of the CMA indicate that this peak is due to elastically scattered electrons passing through the analyzer along a secondary path.
